IBA student representative: Amy Macleod,

Organizing committee student representative: Žan Kuralt,

Within the frames of the Life with bears – 26th IBA Conference we are offering capacity building opportunities for students. Interested students can apply to “shadow” a session chair during the conference. To take part in this opportunity, you need to commit to working with a session chair to learn what is required for communication with session presenters, sitting on stage during the session, and writing up a summary of the session for the IBN conference section. The student will work closely with both the session chair and if necessary the IBN editor for the session summary article. The conference organizers will pair students with session chairs based on interest and commitment of the student.

If you would like to have the opportunity to learn what is is like to chair a session at an International Association for Bear Research & Management conference, write a session summary for the IBN, and get to work with a professional bear biologist, contact the IBA Secretary Jennapher Teunissen van Manen at indicating your field of interest (conference topics). Please indicate in the subject line of your email: Student Session Chair Capacity Building.

There are a few options for budget friendly / free accommodation during the conference.

There are numerous hostels available in the conference venue vicinity.

There is also a substantial Couchsurfing community here in Ljubljana, so it might be worth looking into that as well.

Additionally, some of the local students are offering accommodation at their homes during the conference. You can apply for that option through this online form.

During the conference students raise money for student conference activities via a Silent Auction. The silent auction will be held during Gala dinner event on Thursday, Sept. 20th 2018.

So, as you are packing for the IBA conference please remember to bring an item for the Silent Auction. Items that are unique and/or locally made in your country/region are usually the most coveted items by bidders. Items tend to be bear-related but outdoor gear, services, and other items are also welcome.
Please do not bring bear parts and check to make sure item/contents is not banned from import/export (e.g. wood, rock, alcohol) before bringing them.

Also don’t forget to bring some money to bid on items to support the students!

IBA will award Best Student Oral Presentation, Best Student Speed Talk Presentation and Best Student Poster Presentation at the Life with bears Conference. Judges that are non-student conference participants picked by the IBA council will evaluate the presentations. The winners will be awarded $100 USD and a certificate for their achievement each. The winners will be announced at the conference closing ceremony on Friday, Sept. 21st by Ms. Amy Macleod, Student Representative at International Bear Association Council.

During the conference the students will be invited to attend “The student lunch«. A social event where students and IBA council members share a meal together so the students can ask questions to the IBA Council members and hear what it is like to be on the Council.

Student lunch will take place at the conference venue on Tuesday 18th during lunch break.
